We make our own diaper wipes. After doing a cost analysis I'm not exactly sure why since store-bought versus homemade are exactly the same and we're not very anal-retentive about what touches our babies' butts.
...
Do you see what I did there? Anal? Butts? HA!
Anyhow, I've had 2 whole people ask how we do it, so here:
Buy this:
We used to buy Viva brand paper towels (which advertise their "cloth-like" material), but I also used to shop at Kowalski's, if you know what I mean. (If you don't know what I mean, now I buy Target brand paper towels and shop at Aldi... Because I'm cheap.)
The "select a size" feature is a necessity, btw.
I bought the wipe solution cubes here.
Buy this, too:
It's made by Rubbermaid and I have no idea what its intended purpose is because I CAN'T FIND IT ON THE INTERWEBS ANYWHERE. Thanks, Googles. Anyways, I bought it at Target and it's the perfect size for half of a paper towel roll.
Saw your paper towel roll in half. I use a serrated bread knife. It makes wicked awesome dust bunnies, so beware.
Boil water and pour 2 cups of hothothot water into the perfectly-sized Rubbermaid container, over one wipes-solution cube. Let the cube dissolve.
Here's the secret sauce, kids: once your little soap cube has dissolved, dunk the uncut end of your paper towels in the water.
While the water will work its way up the paper towel, if you don't dunk the top end in the water, you'll have a slightly dry, and scratchy, half to your baby wipe. NO GOOD.
After the dunk, toss the half-roll in the bucket, cut side down, to soak up the remaining wipey water.
A few minutes later, dig out the cardboard roll from the inside. If your wipes are ready, the cardboard will easily pull away from the paper towels and your wipes will pull out from the center of the roll.
Do you have DIY habits that don't save you any money? Do you just like the DIY factor? What do you do yourself instead of buying premade?
